What is Toenail Fungus (Onychomycosis)?
Where does it come from? It lives in dark cool damp places. Shoes, etc. It tends to stay there unless cleared away by a variety of techniques.
What does it do? Discolors and disfigures nails. Causes itching, burning, and general discomfort. Can be a pathway to other pathogens via dry, cracked skin that cause more severe infections Who gets it? Everyone and anyone.
What are the treatment options? Lamisil orally. Works sporadically, but runs the risk of fulminant liver failure. Nail polish that works variably, mostly reliant on patient compliance. Home remedies, all over the board. New option? Laser therapy. Generates non-toxic thermal scission (disruption) of the fungus killing it and allowing new, healthy nail to grow back. Works about 80-90% in correctly selected patients
